Dicom Portable

Dicom Portable is a lightweight utility that runs in the systray and supplies word suggestions when you type text in any application. It has a built-in dictionary to help refresh your memory when you can't remember specific words, ideal for writers.

There is no setup kit involved. Instead, you can extract the program files to a custom location on the hard drive and launch Dicom Portable by just double-clicking on its .exe. The biggest advantage, however, is that you can keep it stored on a USB flash drive to seamlessly launch it on any computer directly from the device. It doesn't update the system registry with new entries.

Once fired up, the application gets integrated into the taskbar notifications area and becomes active immediately, bringing up to the screen a small window with a list of possible words, partially matched to the text you're currently typing.

An entry can be inserted either by clicking on its entry or by pressing the assigned key (functional numbers). The frame shows white text on a black background. However, these colors can be changed into anything else from the configuration panel.

You can set a different font type, make text bold or italic, enter a number of letters before completion, alter the default time before replacement (seconds), and disable automatic insertion. The last mentioned feature monitors what you type and reacts whenever it identifies an unknown word, offering to add it to the built-in dictionary for future reference.

Although the tool doesn't show a list with all words available in its dictionary, it gives you the possibility to look them up using a real-time search tool, import new dictionaries from the computer (.dic format), or reset options to default. The hotkeys for quickly inserting words cannot be remapped.

In conclusion, Dicom Portable proves to be a reliable assistant for reminding you of forgotten words. It's especially practical for those who frequently type lengthy documentation. CPU and RAM usage was minimal in our tests.
