E-number: Food Additives

Our ever-increasing populations demand more and more food, far more that can be produced efficiently through traditional means. This eventually leads to several solutions: either make synthetic foods or make food have a longer shelf life.  What both of these options have in common is that they involve the use of chemicals for treating the food.  It goes without saying that knowing what each of these additives does and how they affect the body can come in handy, and that is where E-number: Food Additives can come in handy.

Given that this is a store app, it follows the same minimalist yet straightforward designed as all the other ones. It is nothing more than a database of around 360 additives arranged and colored in a way that is easy to comprehend. One good example is the fact that all additives are color-coded based on their effect on human health. For example, additives marked with grey haven't been thoroughly researched, the green ones are safe even in high dosages, the orange ones are dangerous after a certain concentration threshold has been reached, and most international laws prohibit the red ones.

Once you select an additive to view, you are presented with a summarized sheet of all the information that might be relevant to you as a consumer. For example, you can see its origin, the purpose it fulfills as a food additive, products in which in may be found, acceptable daily intake dosage, side effects in case of consuming more than the acceptable dosage, and dietary restrictions.

E-number: Food Additives is a neat app, especially for those particularly sensitive to certain substances and compounds. Using this database can give you a heads-up on what foods are safe and which to avoid.
