Let's say you've just returned from a vacation and have a bunch of photos with generic filenames like ‘IMG_001.jpg’ ‘IMG_002.jpg’, and so on. Renaming them to something descriptive like ‘Hawaii_Beach_Sunset.jpg’ or ‘Family_Dinner_Restaurant.jpg’ helps you quickly identify and locate specific photos later on.

Flut Renamer is a versatile application that can assist you in efficiently renaming and managing your files, be it photos, documents, music or other type of data.

The application doesn’t require installation, so just run it and add the files for processing. I appreciate the double-pane interface, as it allows me to seamlessly add all the files to the left, and add or remove them as necessary. As you probably hinted, the right panel is where you can view the processed files with their new names.

I noticed that the app lets you insert file metadata and Exif data into filenames. This means that information such as creation date, author, camera model, and other details embedded within the file can be incorporated into the filename itself.

For instance, if you have a collection of photos taken with different cameras, you can use the tool to automatically include the camera model and capture date in each filename, making it easier to categorize and identify files based on their origin or creation time.

While I tested the tool with just the Replace command, it offers many other renaming options that can come in handy in various situations. You can insert custom text at specified positions within the filenames or remove segments that you deem unnecessary.

With Flut Renamer you can rearrange segments of filenames to restructure file details or standardize naming conventions, automatically increment numbers or dates in filenames, as well as convert characters in filenames to a different script or alphabet.
