It often seems that there are countless ways for others to gain access to your private files, even if you never let anyone else use your computer. Fortunately, there are also plenty of applications that can help you secure them.
One of the options at your disposal is GullLocker, a lightweight, open-source program that uses the BlowFish and AES (Rijndael) algorithms to protect your data. Once encrypted, files are stored in an easily-accessible list.
First and foremost, you need to set up a master password that will be required whenever you want to access your file list. You can only create one list at a time, but every file you encrypt can be added to it.
However, it seems that the current file list can be overwritten by anyone, at any time; users are not required to provide the password when replacing it with a new list, which seems to be a pretty big oversight.
After processing a document, a new file will be created with the GLF extension. It is not added to the list automatically, so you need to do this yourself, either by browsing to its location or using drag and drop actions.
Once an encrypted file has been added, you can open it at any time using the default application. You don’t need to provide a password, and the file will only be stored in a temporary location until you decide to close it again.
Of course, you can also decrypt these files, in which case you will have to provide the password used to lock them.
GullLocker is a pretty useful piece of software, although it could be improved in certain respects. It is an open-source, multi-platform application that enables you to encrypt your files and open them for editing by simply providing a master passworrd.
