A reliable password manager is a necessity these days, when we have so many subscriptions and accounts, each with its own login credentials. Moreover, if we were to follow all the security-related instructions, we must have different, long and complex passwords that are difficult to break or guess and surely impossible to remember. Luckily, passwords managers such as PassCopy only require you to recall a single master password to access all the others, storing them in a secure, encrypted vault on your PC.
The application requires no installation, allowing you to use it on the go and launch it via a USB removable drive. Upon first launch, you are prompted to create a new master password, which must be entered every time you access your personal password vault. It is worth mentioning that PassCopy requires administrative privileges to run properly. Failure to launch it as an admin might trigger access-related errors.
The application’s GUI is simple, with a neatly organized layout comprising several panels. The left-side one includes a list of all the categories of data you can store in PassCopy’s vault. It can include application data (usernames and passwords), banking details, blog, email and FTP login data, certificates, game accounts, shopping-related details, social media accounts and web addresses, work-related information and others.
No matter the category you choose, PassCopy prompts you to fill in the same form with the same details: name of site, username and password, a URL and a note. This is quite unexpected, as a category such as banking should store different types of information than a social media account, for instance. Unfortunately, the array of data you can store in each category is exactly the same.
On the plus side, PassCopy also features a built-in password generator that can create strong passwords, respecting the general security recommendations. The minimum suggested password size if 8 characters, including lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and special characters. Generated passwords can be easily copied to the clipboard.
PassCopy has a lot of potential, but it is obviously below its competitors when it comes to data storage and categories. It does not have clients for other platforms and does not support cloud-based storage. You get a basic password vault that stores data locally, encrypting it to ensure privacy security and avoid data leakage.
