Screen-sharing apps are essential when it comes to online collaboration, especially in business environments, and can have a lot of other education-related purposes as well.
However awesome most screen-solutions might be, they have one prominent inherent drawback: they can pose a lot of difficulties to less experienced users, especially in the configuration phase. Almost all screen-sharing solutions require an Internet connection.
If you want to share your screen with a colleague, or you're trying to troubleshoot a technical problem for a loved one, and you want to do so with the least amount of effort, then you might want to check out Screen Task.
Screen Task is a free and open-source application that facilitates screen sharing in the simplest possible form, allowing one to view the desktop of a remote computer or share the desktop in real-time.
The app allows even the most novice of users to share their screens with any computer inside a network. This means that it doesn't necessarily need an Internet connection to do its job, just as long as the computers in question share the same network, be it wireless or not.
We mentioned the first advantages above, but the app has a lot more advantages that might first meet the eye. For example, it's remarkably lightweight (somewhere around under 1 MB).
The process is done via two important components: the server component (which needs to be installed on the computer that is required to share the screen), and a web GUI (that allows the viewer to receive the shared screen in real-time).
The beauty is that the client (the recipient, or the person that views the screen on the other end) doesn't need to install any additional software, but simply use any modern browser to access the server.
The server's GUI is pretty straightforward as well: you are provided with a series of basic information such as the IP, port, and once the server is launched, with the URL (required to complete the connection) as well.
You can also make your sessions private using a basic authentication method that requires you to enter a username and a password. You can also opt to show or hide the mouse pointer during the screen-sharing session.
Other noteworthy pros include the fact that the app supports an unlimited number of connected clients, and that it also works with multiple screens (meaning you can share the screens of multiple monitors all at once).
By now, it should be quite clear what Screen Task is and isn't. To be more precise, this is not a remote control app, as it simply allows you to either view a remote screen or to share your desktop activity in real-time.
It's a brilliantly straightforward screen-sharing app that is extremely lightweight, very beginner-friendly, and that gets the job done without forcing you or your viewers to do anything more than click a few times to set up the whole thing.
