Since it’s your operating system, the main way to put those hardware components to good use, Windows is responsible for showing general system info, and let you perform various related operations. However, there are also third-party alternatives like TopSyS, coming with extended tools for even more details.
Once installed, you can launch it to find out more about your computer. Before this is possible, you need to make sure that your PC is fitted with .NET Framework, even though modern Windows iterations come with it as a default feature. Moreover, be sure to run it with administrator privileges so it can properly gather all the data it needs.
The main window pops up with a large dashboard that grants access to several tools through an animated environment and icons. There’s also a sidebar with general system and application info, but thorough details are obtained through the four main tools put at your disposal, such as a task manager, defragmenter, list of drivers, and hardware info pane.
The task manager is a simplified version of what Windows provides, but not in a good way. All processes are enlisted without any related details, or options to sort. You can stop them at the press of a button, trigger general PC power options, and view services, but without options to edit them.
Storage space can be optimized for more performance through the defragmenter. A compact window shows up when selected, but you need to plug in any external devices before running the tool, because there’s no refresh button.
Drives for your hardware components can be put under the scope through the dedicated tool. Sadly, it’s just a list, as suggested, with description and info shown if available, but no possibility to stop, or manage them in any way.
Last but not least, the hardware info tool brings up a large panel, accompanied by a sidebar to scan and display different types of info. The list also keeps previous details, adding new ones as you request them. For instance, you can find out more about your processor, motherboard and BIOS, memory units, drives, display, and optical devices. Sadly, you can’t export any of these details.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that TopSyS manages to live up to expectations, but feels a little rough around the edges overall. It can take a few seconds for some functions to respond, while the simplicity of the task manager, defragmenter, and driver list don’t add to practicality, no comfort.
