Storage space is no longer a concern nowadays, especially because of Cloud services that broaden the horizon of possibilities. However, there was a time when you had to carefully select what files to take with you or burn on CDs and specialized applications like WoodCutter came in very handy for splitting large files into multiple volumes for better distribution.

The application comes in a light package. It can be directly downloaded on a USB Flash drive to use on the go because it does not require installation. However, if you do use it on other computers you need to make sure they're equipped with Java Runtime Environment for proper functionality.

There are two counterparts to work with, although one of them not really mandatory. Splitting files, as well as joining, requires little amounts of effort on your behalf and mostly consist of picking one or two folders and pressing a button.

Only one method is used to cut files into multiple pieces. As such, a drop down menu lets you select size multiplier, that can be KB, MB or GB, with the next step being to write down the maximum size of a piece. It would have been useful to see more methods, but it doesn't mean this one is obsolete or can't be used. By default, new volumes are saved in the same folder, with an option to change destination.

The operation is performed pretty fast and good. What's more, the deployed files also benefit from an executable that automatically wraps them up again upon launch. This is why the join tool is rather obsolete, but if you happen to accidentally, remove the created executable, it's not, and has similar setup requirements like the split counterpart, which means it's comprehensive and fast.

Even if space is no longer a great concern, it doesn't mean it's not at all, and applications like WoodCutter still prove to be useful. Uploading an email attachment or various other requirements limit the size of files you manipulate, making it just the right occasion to put simple utilities like this one to good use. Its simple design makes you accommodate in a jiffy, as is the time needed to process target files.
