USDA Zones

Zone's refer to the lowest probable temperature during the year for your region. The application uses the USDA zones as guidelines. For information on the USDA Hardiness zones and to find what zones are applicable to your area, please visit the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

For quick reference, here is a chart of the temperature ranges for each zone:

  1. -50° F
  2. -50° to -40° F
  3. -40° to -30° F
  4. -30° to -20° F
  5. -20° to -10° F
  6. -10° to -0° F
  7. 0° to 10° F
  8. 10° to 20° F
  9. 20° to 30° F
  10. 30° to 40° F
  11. 40° to 50° F
  12. 50° to 60° F
  13. 60° to 70° F
  14. 70° to 80° F
  15. 80° to 90° F
  16. 90° to 100° F
  17. 100°+ F

It is recommened you set your zone in the Preferences window. This will restrict the app to showing only plants that are known to survive in your zone.

Not seeing what you're expecting? Try changing your Zone to a larger number, or if you're using the search screen, try using less parameters. Nature isn't an exact science, so feel free to experiment.

Favorites

To see the list of your favorite plants, click the Favorites icon on the toolbar or select View→Favorites.

To add a plant to your favorites, select the plant and then click the Favorite icon in the plant's detail information, or select Plant→Add to Favorites from the menu.

To remove a plant from your favorites, select the plant and then click the Favorite icon in the plant's detail information, or select Plant→Remove from Favorites from the menu.

Pictures

You can add your own pictures to a plant. Just click the Add Images toolbar button, or select Plant→Add Image from the menu. An Open File dialog is displayed and you can select the image file you would like to add to the current plant's images. Your added images will show up first in the plant detail image views.

If you want to delete your own images, select the image and select Edit→Delete from the menu or press the delete function key (the one with the little x). This will remove your image from the plant details, but it won't delete it from your computer. If you accidentally delete an image just undo it by selecting Edit→Undo Delete Image from the menu.

Notes

To keep notes on your plants, select the Notes tab on the right side of the window.

To add a note select Plant→Add Note from the menu, or click the Add Note toolbar button. A dialog is displayed where you can enter a title and text for the note. Click the OK button to save the note, or the Cancel button to exit without saving.

To delete a note, select the note in the list of notes and select Edit→Delete from the menu or just press the delete key. If you accidentally delete a note just undo it by selecting Edit→Undo Delete Note from the menu.

To edit a note, double click on the note, or select it and press the return key or the spacebar.

Pre Download Images

Clicking the Pre Download Images buttons in the Preferences window downloads all of the images in the app so that you can use the app offline (without internet access). Because of the volume and quality of images, doing this may take a few hours, depending on your internet connection speed. Just leave the Preferences window open to allow the app to download the images. If the window is closed (when the app quits, for example), simply reopen the Preferences window and press the Pre Download Images button again. It only downloads the images that it hasn't already downloaded.
