Alchemy is a research project that allows users to compile C++ and C code that is targeted to run on the open source ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM2). The purpose of this preview is to assess the level of community interest in reusing existing C and C++ libraries in Web applications that run on Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR.
The magic of Alchemy happens when you compile your C/C++ code into ActionScript 3.0, creating SWF or SWC files that can run on Adobe Flash Player 10 or Adobe AIR 1.5. It gives your web app a superpower by leveraging existing C/C++ libraries.
Alchemy is perfect for tasks that require heavy lifting and performance optimization. It excels in audio/video transcoding, data manipulation, XML parsing, cryptography, and physics simulations. While it may be slightly slower than native C/C++ code, the performance boost over ActionScript 3.0 is considerable.
This tool makes it seamless to create a bridge between C/C++ and ActionScript 3.0, expanding the capabilities of your applications on the Flash Platform while ensuring the security of your code. The generated SWC and SWF files are designed to uphold existing Flash Player security protocols.
