Ambiance Refined III

Ambiance Refined III combines the latest Ambiance theme from Ubuntu 10.10 with the previous Ambiance Refined II theme. If you're looking to give your desktop a fresh look, this is a great way to start!

Installing Murrine GTK Engine

To get everything up and running, you'll need the latest Murrine GTK engine. Just pop open your terminal and run these two commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:murrine-daily/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine

Setting Up Faenza Icons

You can also enhance your experience with Faenza icons. Once you have everything installed, here’s how to change your desktop background:

• Right-click on your desktop and select Change Desktop Background.


• Click on the first tab labeled Theme.


• Drag and drop the theme's archive into the Appearance Preferences window.


• If all goes well, you'll see a confirmation message. Just click on it to activate the new theme!

What is GNOME?

You might have heard of GNOME before! It's an international project aimed at building a complete desktop environment using free software. Basically, it provides that graphical user interface we all see on our computers. This includes creating frameworks for software development, picking out applications for users, and managing things like launching apps, handling files, and managing windows.

The GNOME project is part of the larger GNU Project and works well with Unix-like operating systems—especially Linux. It even fits into Solaris as part of its Java Desktop System!

The name used to stand for GNU Network Object Model Environment, but that's not really used anymore. What’s cool about GNOME is that it focuses heavily on simplicity and usability—making sure everything just works without a hassle.
