ASCII Draw is a pretty cool tool for making diagrams. Diagrams are great for learning and can really help us understand big sets of data by showing them visually. If you’re using Linux, there are loads of apps out there that can help you create diagrams. But if you're looking to turn those diagrams into ASCII art, you might have tried an ASCII converter app. The catch? You don’t always get to control how the final product looks.
Now, when you hear about ASCII Draw, it might sound a bit odd since it’s not your typical diagram tool. As the name suggests, this app lets you draw using ASCII characters! It’s different but can be super useful in certain situations.
If you've ever thought about embedding your diagrams directly into your project’s source code, then ASCII Draw is definitely something to check out. It could save you some time and effort!
The first thing you'll notice about the app is that it's made with GTK Libadwaita, which means it fits right in with GNOME desktop environments. It's also pretty straightforward to use! You’ve got a top menu for navigation, a side panel that you can hide away when you don’t need it, and a bottom toolbar packed with all the tools you'll need.
You’ll find tools like a freehand brush and line options, straight lines and arrows, rectangles, a character picker for choosing symbols, text tools for adding labels, and even an eraser!
I’m not usually super excited about ASCII or diagrams in general, but I had a fun time playing around with ASCII Draw. It’s simple yet nicely designed and gets the job done without any fuss. Oh, and did I mention? It’s free and open-source—just like all other apps from Nokse22!
