DJohn

DJohn is a cool tool that helps you crack passwords faster by using multiple machines instead of just one. This means you can get your passwords sooner! It works with John the Ripper, which does the heavy lifting, while DJohn's server (called djohnd) splits the work into little packets and coordinates everything among different clients (those are the machines doing the cracking).

How DJohn Works

Password Files and Security

Another thing to know is that clients can't download password files themselves. Someone else has to do it—like another user or a different process. But don’t worry! Starting from version 0.9.8, there’s a handy server/client setup in Perl that can help with this task.

DJohn is built for use in closed networks where all machines can be trusted, so security isn’t much of a concern here. Just keep in mind that it’s best if all your clients have similar CPU power for optimal performance.

Monitoring Your Server Status

You can easily check the status of your server using a utility called djs. But here's a little tip: you can only use this on the machine where your server is running since it relies on shared memory to get status updates.
