Geary is a cool open-source email client that makes reading conversations super easy. It's designed to help you follow email discussions without any fuss. Plus, it works great with the GNOME desktop environment!
Right now, Geary is still in the early stages of development, but it already lets you do some handy things like write, delete, or archive messages. You can also label or move whole conversations around and star important messages or mark them as read or unread.
The first time you open Geary, it will prompt you to add an email account. By default, it starts with Gmail, but you can also choose from other popular services like Yahoo! Mail and Outlook.com.
If your email provider isn't one of the pre-set options, no worries! Just pick the "Other" option and it'll take you straight to where you can enter IMAP and SMTP settings. If you're not ready to set up an account yet, that's fine too; just know that the app will close if you skip this step.
The interface is simple and uncluttered. This means you can quickly read your emails without having to open them in different windows. The only time a new window pops up is when you're composing a message.
If we peek under the hood, we see that Geary was built using the Vala programming language. It offers a familiar graphical user interface (GUI) created in GTK+, which helps it blend nicely with GNOME.
This app has been tested successfully on major Linux distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora. But keep in mind that it's available only as a source archive for those who want to configure, compile, and install it on other open-source operating systems.
To wrap things up, Geary aims to be a lightweight email client tailored for GNOME and other open-source window managers. While it's not quite ready to take over from powerful clients like Mozilla Thunderbird or Evolution yet, the developers have plans for adding more features in future updates!
