The Origins of Gnokii

The story of Gnokii starts back in late October 1998. It all began when Francois Dessart, Hugh Blemings, and a few others decided to create something better than Nokia's Cellular Data Suite (CDS) for Linux users.

A Merge of Ideas

Before Gnokii, there was another project led by Staffan Ulfberg aimed at providing software for the Nokia 6110 and other similar phone models. While they hadn’t really started coding yet, merging with the original project helped everyone avoid doing the same work twice.

Why Was This Important?

Back in those days, many popular phones didn’t support an AT layer to make data calls for internet access. This was tough! But thanks to NDCS (among other tools), Gnokii came to the rescue.

A Team Effort

By February 1999, both projects joined forces and became what we know today as Gnokii. The goal was simple: share information easily without cluttering up with too many mailing lists.

A Little Setback and Comeback

The journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Towards the end of 2000, things slowed down because Pavel Janik and Hugh Blemings had other commitments. But don’t worry! Some long-term contributors jumped in to keep things moving forward again.
