Description

GNOME Keyring FOR LINUX

GNOME Keyring is an open source project that provides users with a collection of command-line programs and libraries for capturing and storing passwords, certificates, encryption keys, and other secrets that can't be viewed by others. It is distributed as part of the GNOME project, automatically configured and set up with every fresh installation of the controversial desktop environment.

Features:

  • Runs in the background as a daemon

  • Designed to manage multiple keyrings simultaneously

  • Integrates well with GNOME Display Manager (GDM)

  • Automatically unlocks user's secrets upon session login

  • Stores certificates in specific categories (GNOME2 Key Storage, User Key Storage, or System Trust)

  • Supports Secure Shell (SSH) and PGP (GnuPG) keys

  • Stores authentication credentials from third-party applications

Functionality:

The project is based around the PKCS#11 specification, providing a secure way for applications to manage keys and certificates. It also features a session keyring that is automatically dumped at the end of the GNOME session.

Integration:

In addition to its integration with main GNOME components, GNOME Keyring can store authentication credentials from various third-party applications, enhancing its usability and security features.

GNOME Keyring is a crucial component of the GNOME desktop environment, ensuring the safe storage of sensitive data such as website logins, app passwords, PGP and SSH keys, and certificates. Without it, GNOME would pose significant security risks.
