grml2usb FOR LINUX



grml2usb is a small utility that allows you to boot grml from an USB stick or a Firewire device.


grml officially supports booting from usb-stick with all grml flavours. First of all make sure your system supports booting via usb/firewire. Some hardware claims to be able to boot via usb/firewire but does not really support it the way it should work.

  • Requires root privileges and mountpoint setup

  • Compatible with Debian system



Installation Steps:



  1. Get the grml iso

  2. Mount the iso loopback

  3. Make FAT16 filesystem on the usbstick

  4. Mount the usbstick

  5. Copy everything to the usbstick

  6. Move necessary files to the root of usb-stick

  7. Run syslinux on the usbstick

  8. Check if the usbstick has a valid mbr

  9. Set the bootable flag if needed

  10. Continue the installation as usual



Additional Notes:



  • USB booting may not be well supported by all BIOS versions

  • Some BIOS modes for USB booting include USB-HDD or USB-ZIP

  • mkdiskimage utility can be used to re-format USB stick as USB-ZIP format

  • Ensure proper installation to avoid common issues like missing kernel image
