What is GSmartControl FOR LINUX?

GSmartControl

GSmartControl is a free and open-source software that’s super user-friendly. It acts like a cool front-end for the smartctl command-line tool, helping you check out your hard drives on GNU/Linux systems and other compatible platforms.

Understanding Smartctl

The smartctl utility is part of the Smartmontools package. It lets you query and control S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on modern hard disk drives (HDD) and it works with SSDs (Solid State Drives) too!

Awesome Features of GSmartControl

This application has some neat features:

  • You can turn S.M.A.R.T. functionality on or off.

  • It automatically highlights any weird stuff it finds.

  • You can enable or disable Auto Offline Data Collection.

  • Set per-drive options as well as global settings for smartctl.

Your Disk’s Best Friend

With GSmartControl, you can run S.M.A.R.T. self-tests, read saved smartctl outputs as if they were virtual devices, and check out all sorts of info about your hard drives. This includes attributes, capabilities, identity info, self-test logs, and error logs. Plus, it comes with detailed documentation to help you out!

User Privileges Required

The first time you open the program, it will ask for root privileges because only system admins can see detailed disk information. Once you're in, it will find and list all the HDDs or SSDs connected to your computer.

Navigating GSmartControl

You just click on a device from the list to turn S.M.A.R.T. or Auto Offline Data Collection on or off. You can also re-read data, run different tests (only if S.M.A.R.T. is enabled), and check out detailed information like model number, serial number, firmware version, capacity, rotation rate—lots of details!

Cross-Platform Compatibility

GSmartControl is written in C++ using the GTK+ GUI toolkit for its interface. It works great across different operating systems: GNU/Linux, BSD, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X are all supported! It even caters to both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware architectures!
