GtkHash is a cool, open-source software that helps you calculate checksums and message digests. It's totally free and built using the GTK+ toolkit. This makes it a handy desktop tool if you're looking to verify file integrity.
This nifty software supports all the major hash functions you might need, like MD5, WHIRLPOOL, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512, HAVAL, RIPEMD, and TIGER. While it's mainly designed for Linux, it should also work fine on other POSIX-compliant operating systems.
If you want to get the most out of GtkHash, there are some optional requirements you might want to check out. These include zlib, Linux kernel 2.6.38 (with CONFIG_CRYPTO_USER_API_HASH), libcrypto, libgcrypt, PolarSSL, NSS, Nettle, mhash, Nautilus, Thunar, and Nemo.
The user interface is super simple and intuitive! Just click on the ‘File’ button to select the file you want to check. Then enter the original hash in the ‘Check’ box.
Once you're set up with your file and hash inputted, hit the ‘Hash’ button! You can generate MD5, SHA1, and SHA256 checksums easily. If your original hash matches any of these generated ones—great news! A verified sign will pop up next to your ‘Check’ box showing everything's good!
You can customize how you view your files with options from the View menu: File view mode or Text view mode (even a File List view!). And if you'd like more hashing options in your main window—like MD6-256 or CRC32—you can add those through the Preferences dialog.
A neat feature? You can change how your digest looks! Choose between Lowercase Hexadecimal or Uppercase Hexadecimal or even Base64 formats! Plus saving hashes to a text file is super easy with the ‘Save As’ function found in the ‘File’ menu.
If you're curious about what's under the hood of GtkHash: It’s written entirely in C programming language! It uses GTK+ for its graphical interface which makes it cross-platform friendly—it works on various Linux distributions as well as FreeBSD supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware!
