Description

Hexedit

Hexedit is a totally free and open-source command-line tool that lets you view and edit files in both hexadecimal and ASCII formats on any GNU/Linux system. It's pretty handy if you're diving into the nitty-gritty of file editing!

Features of Hexedit

This software gives you three main options to play with: -s or --sector, which formats the display to show entire sectors; -m or --maximize, which maximizes your display; and -h or --help, which shows you how to use the software.

Getting Started with Hexedit

If you're ready to jump in, start by typing hexedit --help in your terminal. This will show you all the commands you can use! From there, just choose one of those options and follow it up with the file you want to edit. For example: hexedit -s softpedia.

Edit Files Easily

The cool thing about Hexedit is that it reads files piece by piece. You can modify them on the go and even search through them as needed. It also has many commands for moving files around, plus cut-and-paste features.

Installing Hexedit on Your System

Installing Hexedit is a breeze! Start by downloading the latest version from Softpedia or their official site (check out this link for more details). If you're on a 32-bit system, there's a pre-built binary available. But if you're using a 64-bit distro, you'll need to grab the source package instead.

How to Install Hexedit Step-by-Step

Once you've got that source package saved in your Home directory, extract its contents using an archive manager. Then, open up your Terminal app and navigate to where you extracted it (like: cd /home/yourusername/hexedit, swapping 'yourusername' for your actual username).

Compile and Install Hexedit

The next step is super simple! Type ./configure && make. This will configure and compile the program for you. If everything goes well, just run sudo make install, and you'll have Hexedit installed system-wide. If you'd rather run it directly from where you extracted it, just type ./hexedit.

Your Download Awaits!
