IBus is a cool open-source software that helps you type in different languages on Linux and UNIX-like systems. It’s not like your usual software since it doesn't have a fancy graphical user interface (GUI). Instead, it acts as a smart input method framework for multilingual typing.
If you want to get IBus up and running, first make sure you have all its dependencies sorted out. You can grab the source package from our dedicated download section. Just save the package in your Home directory. Once that's done, uncompress it and open up a Terminal app. Then, navigate to where you unpacked the files (for example: cd /home/softpedia/ibus-1.5.5
).
To get everything configured, run this command: ./autogen.sh --prefix='/usr' --sysconfdir='/etc' --libdir='/usr/lib' --enable-gtk-doc
. After that, compile the program by typing make
, and then install it system-wide with sudo make install
. If you're more into using Git, you can grab the source code by running: git clone git://github.com/ibus/ibus.git ibus
.
Once you've got IBus installed, check out its features! Open a terminal emulator and type ibus
. This will show you some commands like engine, list-engine, read-cache, write-cache, watch, restart, address, help, version, and exit. You’ll need to add one of those commands along with an option when using IBus.
You can use these built-in commands to set or get the input engine you're using or list all available engines. Want to restart the ibus daemon? No problem! You can also display content from the registry cache or print out the D-Bus address of ibus daemon.
If you're working with GTK+ 2.x or GTK+ 3.x applications, X11 or Wayland technologies will be ready for you after installation!
