Kat

Kat is a cool application designed for KDE that helps you index your files. It pulls out all the important info, like meta data, full text, and even thumbnails from documents, images, MP3s, and other media types. This makes it super easy to find what you're looking for!

How Does Kat Work?

Think of it like the Windows app WhereIsIt or Google Desktop Search. Kat is built entirely in C++, using Qt3, KDE, and KIO libraries. It's really user-friendly and efficient!

A Strong Foundation

This app relies on KDE's flexible kfile plugin system. That means it can easily adapt to new media managers for new file formats popping up all the time.

The first KDE app to use the new full-text kfile plugins, Kat uses a robust SQLite3 database engine for information retrieval. It’s quick and reliable!

Requirements to Get Started

If you want to install Kat, you'll need some packages like libsqlite3-dev (3.2.1-1). Here’s how to set it up:

$ make -f Makefile.cvs

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr # (or your preferred location)

$ make

$ make install # You must be root!
