linHDD is a handy hard drive utility that makes managing your drives a lot easier. It's like a friendly front end for some basic Linux drive tools like hdparm, cfdisk, df, and mkfs. With linHDD, you can add a second drive right from the GUI, check free space, get extended drive info, and even test read speeds!
This app is super convenient because it saves you time and helps avoid mistakes from typing commands. Plus, it has an easy-to-use interface that's perfect for newcomers or anyone who doesn't want to memorize all those console commands.
The first version of linHDD only worked with IDE hard drives because I didn't have the boards or drives to test SATA or SCSI. But don't worry! Adding support for those shouldn't be too tricky once I get my hands on the right gear.
linHDD acts as a frontend for essential Linux tools that should already be on your machine. For instance, hdparm shows all the detailed info about your drive in a big textbox. You can also test how fast your HDD reads in MB/s! The tool df, lists mounted devices while mkfs, helps with formatting (it supports ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs if available). And if you want to partition a drive, just use cfdisk.
I designed linHDD with safety in mind. It won't let you partition a mounted hard drive or format any mounted partition. Plus, any partitioning or formatting needs to be done as root. If you try to partition while one of its partitions is already mounted, you'll see an error message.
You can run linHDD without being root! This way you can check out your drive space and see all that detailed info in the textbox and even run speed tests. Just remember—you won't be able to format or partition without root access.
