Description
Linux IP Firewalling Chains
Linux IP Firewalling Chains is a cool update to the 2.0 Linux Firewalling code that works with the 2.2 Linux kernel. This software helps you manage IP packet filters in Linux kernel versions 2.1.102 and later. If you're using an older version of the Linux firewall, you might run into some issues.
Why Upgrade?
The old firewalling code has some limitations. For instance, it doesn’t handle packet fragments well and only uses 32-bit counters on Intel systems. It also restricts you to just three protocols: TCP, UDP, or ICMP. Plus, making big changes at once isn’t possible, and if you want to set up inverse rules or deal with quirks, you'll find it tough! This can lead to mistakes when managing your firewall.
Current Status
You can find the updated code in the vanilla kernel sources starting from version 2.1.102. But if you're using a 2.0 kernel series, you'll need to grab a kernel patch from the internet.
Patching Your Kernel
If your 2.0 kernel is newer than the patch provided, don’t worry too much; older patches usually work fine since this part of the kernels is pretty stable! For example, the 2.0.34 kernel patch works perfectly on the 2.0.35 kernel. Just keep in mind that applying this patch could cause issues with ipportfw and ipautofw patches—so only go for it if you really need features that ipchains offers!
