Description
Linux WLAN Project
The Linux WLAN Project aims to create a complete, standards-based wireless LAN system using the GNU/Linux operating system. It’s pretty cool how it brings together technology and open-source software!
What is the linux-wlan Package?
The linux-wlan package is a device driver and subsystem package made for Linux. It’s designed to give you full control over IEEE 802.11 MAC management features. This means you can use it with user-mode utilities and scripts to manage your wireless connections easily.
Supported Devices
This package supports various devices like Intersil 802.11b Prism2, Prism2.5, and Prism3 designs for PCMCIA, PCI, and USB interfaces. So if you have hardware that matches these specs, you’re in luck!
Additional Features
The package also works with PLX9052 based PCI to PCMCIA adapters along with several different PCMCIA cards. That means more options for connecting your devices wirelessly!
Requirements:
If you're looking to build linux-wlan-ng, here's what you'll need:
- You must have configured kernel source code for the kernel you're running. Ideally, this should be from building your own kernel.
- If you're trying to build it for an existing kernel binary (not one you built), check out some mailing lists for help—it can get tricky!
- If you run into trouble with *_netlink_* symbols, try doing a 'make clean' in the kernel tree first.
- A thorough cleaning with 'make mrproper' followed by 'make config' could fix issues too.
For more detailed advice on these steps, check out David Leffler's comments in the linux-wlan-user mailing list.
Building Drivers for PCMCIA Cards
If you're building a driver specifically for a PCMCIA card, don’t forget that you'll also need the configured PCMCIA source code for the pcmcia_cs subsystem that you’re currently running.
