Logwatch is a super handy log analysis tool that you can customize just how you like! It takes a look through your system's logs over a specific time frame and creates a detailed report based on what you want to check out.
The best part? Logwatch is really user-friendly and will work right off the bat on most systems. Whether you're using Linux or UNIX, this tool has got your back. Some versions of these systems come with Logwatch already set up, but they might tweak the settings a bit to fit their needs. Most users won't even have to change anything!
If you do want to make some tweaks, starting from version 7.0, Logwatch makes it easier than ever to modify your local system settings. You might need to do this if the service that's writing to your system log has been changed from its default setting or if you'd like different reports from Logwatch.
You can easily customize how Logwatch displays information by changing variables in the /etc/logwatch/conf
directory. The default settings are located in /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf
, and there may be extra defaults in /usr/share/logwatch/dist.conf
. All available variables are listed in these files, so feel free to adjust them for better results!
A cool feature available for all services is the 'Detail' variable. Just keep in mind that it doesn't have a '$' symbol before it! If you set a Detail value, it will change the global Detail level just for that service. This way, you get exactly what you're looking for without any unnecessary info cluttering up your report.
