How Does MAC NameServer Work?

This application regularly checks the subnet it’s on and keeps track of all the MAC addresses it finds. It saves this info in a file similar to LMHOSTS, which your local machine can use to look up an IP address based on a MAC address.

Things to Know About MAC NameServer

• When you run MacNS, it will use some processor time and network bandwidth. Plus, it’ll take up space on your hard drive even when it’s not running.


• It’s important to note that MacNS only works on Windows. So if you’re using Linux, Mono, Macintosh, iPhone, or Google Phone, you’re out of luck!


• This tool won’t work beyond your local subnet. The SendARP command won’t grab MAC addresses across routers.


• If there are changes in IP addresses, don’t expect instant updates. MacNS slowly scans the network and will only find new ARP entries when it comes across them.


• Your network admin might not love this tool since it scans the network and could be seen as an intrusion. Plus, it might fill up your ARP cache.


• This software doesn’t function as a DNS server; instead, it creates a LMHOSTS file for local use only. But hey, you can share that file in a shared directory if needed!


• Lastly, don’t expect a fancy user interface! MacNS doesn’t scan the network in the background; so while waiting for an ARP response, there may be some delays—but don’t worry; other programs will still work!
