Description
Mail Notification
Mail Notification is a handy little status icon that pops up to let you know if you've got new mail waiting for you. No more checking your inbox every few minutes!
Features of Mail Notification
This software works with system trays that follow the freedesktop.org System Tray Specification. That means it plays well with popular environments like GNOME Panel, Xfce Notification Area, and KDE System Tray. Here are some cool features:
- Supports multiple mailboxes
- Works with mbox, MH, Maildir, Sylpheed, POP3, IMAP, and Gmail
- SASL authentication support
- APOP authentication support
- SSL/TLS support for secure connections
- Automatically detects mailbox formats
- You get immediate notifications—your status icon updates within seconds!
- A summary of new mail at a glance
- Follows HIG 2.0 compliance guidelines.
Requirements to Use Mail Notification
If you want to use Mail Notification smoothly, here’s what you might need:
- GMime version 2.1.0 or higher (optional)
- OpenSSL version 0.9.5b or higher (optional)
- Cyrus SASL version 2.0 or higher (optional)
- ICU version 2.6 or higher (optional)
Troubleshooting Tips
If you're using GNOME 2.10 and can't find the Mail Notification entry in your Preferences menu, no worries! You can access preferences through the main window by going to Applications → Internet → Mail Notification.
If you're using idle mode and some IMAP servers drop the connection when you're not active for a while, that could cause issues too! If this happens, just turn off "Use idle mode if possible" in your mailbox settings.
If you're having trouble with Gmail crashing when checking your inbox due to recent changes on their end, you may need to remove the problematic mailbox via gconf-editor by editing the /apps/mail-notification/mailboxes key.
If notifications aren't showing up correctly for mbox or similar types due to fast kernel notifiers like imon or inotify, applying a patch might help fix that.
