Metalinks is an effort to promote the use of Peer to peer technology to aid web administrators in keeping their bandwidth down. The metalink project defines a usable and simple way to share metadata in hash and digest forms using XML.
Data integrity is becoming a larger problem on the net, and trusted secure bandwidth is often limited. The solution is to use encryption to ensure the resulting data is correct, allowing you to transmit the data through an unsecure connection with possible data corruption. This ensures that any changes can be detected, reducing the chances of working with the wrong file.
These metadata pointers can be utilized by modern P2P networks to identify and gather the right data. The metadata XML record acts as a link, hence the name metalinks.
XML is machine-readable, and with XSLT, it can also be made human-readable. When you open a metalinks record in your browser, you will see a simple description of the file and P2P links you can click on.
After gathering the data, the integrity can be securely checked using the metadata available in the metalink XML record. This allows the receiver to verify the integrity using SHA1, MD5, SHA512, and other provided in the record.
