Now let’s talk about GNOME! It’s an international project aimed at creating a complete desktop environment. Basically, it’s all about building a user-friendly graphical interface that sits right on top of your operating system—using free software all along the way. The goal is to develop software frameworks, select cool applications for your desktop, and work on programs that help with launching apps, handling files, and managing windows and tasks.
GNOME is part of the GNU Project and works well with many Unix-like operating systems—especially Linux—and even plays nicely with Solaris through its Java Desktop System.
The name originally stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment (which sounds fancy), but we don’t really use that acronym anymore. The main focus of the GNOME project is simplicity and usability; they want everything to just work without any fuss!
