NS Query

NS Query is a handy little tool that gives you a friendly interface for the NSLookup utility. It’s small, super quick, and portable, making it easy to run name resolution queries from DNS servers.

Getting Started with NS Query

To kick things off with a name server query, you'll need to fill in a few details:

DNS Server

This is the server that will handle your query. When you launch NS Query, it automatically checks your PC for DNS specifications and loads them into the DNS Servers combo box. You can either pick one from the list or type in the address of the DNS server you want to use.

Selecting Record Type

Next up is choosing your record type! From this combo box, you can select what kind of query you want to run. Options include Mail Server (MX), Host IP (A), Alias (PTR), or Name Server (NS).

Name to Resolve

This is where you enter the name you’re looking to resolve. For example, just type in google.com or microsoft.com—leave out any protocol references like www or ftp.

Setting Time Out

You’ll also find an option for setting the query time out. The default time is set at 5 seconds, but feel free to adjust it if needed!

Adjusting Port Settings

The last detail is about the port number. The standard DNS port is 53, but if you need to change it for any reason, you can do so right here.
