OmniBiff

OmniBiff is a cool universal biff program that can keep an eye on lots of email servers. It works with almost any type, including UNIX mail, POP3, IMAP4, Hotmail.com, Yahoo.com, and more. What’s great is that OmniBiff can show alerts in a nice graphical way or even act as a proxy for other biff programs.

What’s New in This Release?

Here are some exciting updates:

• Embedded Lisp Capability: Now you can use embedded lisp in HTTP-based bifflets.


• Password Encryption: Your passwords stored in the config file are now encrypted for better security.


• Source Code Reorganization: The source code and packages have been cleaned up and organized.


• Easy Configuration: You can now configure it using autoconf (just run configure/make/make install).


• Simplified Scripts: There are new scripts for running OmniBiff and its configurator (omnibiff and omnibiff-setup).

Bugs Fixed

A few bugs got squashed too!

• The Hotmail bifflet has been updated for the latest website changes.


• The Yahoo bifflet has also received an update for recent changes.


• The Unix bifflet now works better with Evolution. Even though Evolution doesn’t update the message status when you read emails, it adds an X-Evolution field when emails have been seen.


• HTTP bifflets will use the USER-AGENT specified in the XML file. If not specified, this field will be left out of HTTP requests. This change was important for Lycos because it needs this information to decide if it should gzip-encode HTML pages.

Bifflets Removed

• Bisto, Deja, BusinessWeekMail, Alta-Vista have all been removed since they no longer provide email services.
