Description

OpenCDN

OpenCDN is a handy tool designed for building an application-level Content Delivery Network. It’s great for sharing live and recorded multimedia content. So, if you’re into streaming or sharing videos, this could be right up your alley!

How OpenCDN Works

This software is written in Perl and uses a cool tech called Relay to split incoming media packets. This means it can handle multiple streams of data at once! The system has a control plane that lets you manage how content gets delivered remotely.

Content Distribution Made Easy

The media distribution is organized among various Nodes with the help of a central unit known as Request Routing and Distribution Management (RRDM). Yep, that’s also written in Perl! Content providers can register their media and share metadata about it.

Efficient Media Delivery

If there are enough Relay nodes set up between the source and where the content needs to go, OpenCDN can send media out to tons of clients without stressing the network or servers too much. It really shines in delivering content by crossing the first and last mile only once!

Modular Code for Flexibility

The code is super modular, making it easy to adapt to different Relay technologies. Originally, it was built on Apple's Darwin Streaming Server but later tweaked for Helix Universal Server by Real.

What’s New in This Release?

  • Content Provider Kit (CPK): This kit contains everything needed for origin entities focused on VideoLAN use. It even offers a web-based setup!

  • The install script has been updated to make things easier.

  • If registration fails, the web interface now guides users on how to get credentials from OpenCDN.

  • A new bash script helps restart processes smoothly.

  • The CPK auto-senses its IP address—super convenient!

  • Added support for new Perl modules like File-MMagic-1.27 and more!

VideoLAN Adaptation Layer

  • A new VLC module controls VideoLAN processes using its telnet interface.

  • The transport mode “v” means VideoLAN is supported now!

User-Friendly Portal Enhancements

  • An embedded player is now included in response pages.

  • Selecting available contents got easier with a new table format.
