Description
PhoDAV
PhoDAV is a super handy, open-source software that you can use on different platforms! It's built in C and uses the libsoup (RFC 4918) and GIO libraries. The cool thing about PhoDAV is that it’s designed to be an easy-to-use WebDAV server specifically for GNU/Linux systems, but it works with Microsoft Windows too!
What’s It For?
Originally, this program was created to help share files for the SPICE server. However, it’s flexible enough to be used in other projects as well. Right now, you can find it included as part of the GNOME desktop environment. If you want extra security when sharing a directory, you can use optional digest authentication with the chezdav tool that's integrated into PhoDAV.
How to Get Started
- First, download the latest version from Softpedia.
- Save the TAR archive somewhere on your computer.
- Extract its contents.
- Open up a terminal emulator and navigate to where you extracted the files using the ‘cd’ command.
- Then run ‘./configure && make’ to set everything up and compile it for your hardware (32-bit or 64-bit).
Using PhoDAV After Installation
Once you've compiled it, PhoDAV will give you a library and a standalone command called chezdav, which makes sharing directories via WebDAV super easy! The main command you'll be using is spice-webdavd. You can see all its options by typing ‘spice-webdavd --help’ in your terminal. It mainly lets you specify the port number for connecting.
System-Wide Installation
If you want everyone on your machine to access PhoDAV after installation, just run either ‘make install’ as root or ‘sudo make install’ as an admin user. And don’t worry; if you're curious about getting more updates or info, check out the latest source code available via Git!
