What is Shrinkta FOR LINUX?

Shrinkta

Shrinkta is a handy DVD backup tool designed for the GNOME desktop. It uses the libdvd library to copy your DVDs, relying on dvdread library to get the job done. Right now, it’s pretty basic and doesn’t have features like a navigation menu or subtitle support, but it gets the job done!

What Can Shrinkta Do?

The main goals of this project are:

  • Backup a single DVD movie title onto a single-layer DVD disk.

  • Backup an entire DVD onto another disk with similar capacity.

  • Create a simple DVD using compatible video and audio streams.

Requirements for Using Shrinkta

To use Shrinkta effectively, you’ll need the following:

  • Tcrequant: This helps resize the video stream if needed and comes with the transcode package.

  • Mplex: This multiplexes video and audio streams into a DVD-compatible mpeg2 stream, part of the mjpegtools package.

  • Dvdauthor: Creates the DVD titleset and Table Of Contents.

  • Mkisofs: Used to create the disk image.

  • Nautilus-cd-burner: Useful for writing that image onto a disk.

What’s New in This Release?

Check out what’s been added recently:

  • A user manual that actually makes sense!

  • Screenshots included in the manual for better understanding.

  • Help options added to both shrinkta menu and preferences dialog.

  • The build has been cleaned up to look more GNOME-like.

  • Updates made to rpm spec file for better compatibility.

  • No more internal copy of dvdnav; now requires libdvdread as a dependency with checks in configure.in.

  • You can now stop an ongoing full backup with ease!

  • The region code is now compared when backing up to ensure everything matches up correctly!

If you're looking for an easy way to back up your DVDs, Shrinkta might be just what you need!
