Description
SMTP Relay Checker
SMTP Relay Checker is a super handy tool that helps you check if your mail server is working properly. It's an open-source, multithreaded scanner that can handle scanning IP blocks and even show results on a web page. Pretty cool, right?
What Is SMTP Relay Checker Used For?
This tool is mainly for Systems Administrators who need to keep an eye on the IP blocks they manage. It makes sure everything is running smoothly and checks if the mail servers are relaying emails correctly.
How to Build SMTP Relay Checker
If you're looking to get started with SMTP Relay Checker, it’s super easy to build! Just head over to the package directory and run:
make
This will create the package and give you a binary called smtprc
. To install it, simply run:
make install
Where Does Everything Go?
When you install SMTP Relay Checker, here’s where everything ends up by default:
- /usr/local/bin/smtprc
- /usr/local/bin/gsmtprc
- /usr/local/etc/smtprc/auto.conf
- /usr/local/etc/smtprc/email.tmpl
- /usr/local/etc/smtprc/rcheck.conf
- /usr/local/share/doc/smtprc/README
- /usr/local/share/doc/smtprc/FAQ
- /usr/local/man/man1/smtprc.1
- /usr/local/man/man1/gsmtprc.1
Running SMTP Relay Checker
You can run SmtpRC by giving it options directly in the command line or by setting up an "auto configuration" file. The second option is way easier! Once installed, there's a sample auto configuration file in /usr/local/etc/smtprc/auto.conf
. Just change the values in that file to match your network needs and run SmtpRC like this:
/usr/local/bin/smtprc -j /usr/local/etc/smtprc/auto.conf
Email Testing Made Easy!
SmtpRC does a great job of checking if your mail server can relay emails from third-party addresses. It’s best to use a mailbox on the local machine where SmtpRC runs for testing. You can create a new user account (let's call it smtprc), set its email address, and then SmtpRC will try relaying emails there while checking for received messages.
User-Friendly GUI Option!
If you’re into graphical interfaces, there’s also gsmtprc available in /usr/local/bin! Just keep in mind that you’ll need Perl Tk installed to use it.
