You might be wondering what GNOME is all about. It’s an international effort to build a complete desktop environment using free software. This means it creates all sorts of tools for managing applications, launching them, handling files, and sorting out windows and tasks.
GNOME is part of the GNU Project and works really well with various Unix-like operating systems—especially Linux! It even fits into Solaris as part of its Java Desktop System.
The name GNOME originally stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment but don’t worry about that too much now; it's not used anymore. What matters is that GNOME focuses heavily on making things simple, easy to use, and ensuring everything just works!
