Snowbox

Snowbox is a super simple and user-friendly POP3 server that's written in Perl. You can get it up and running in just a few minutes, and guess what? You won't have to mess with loads of files scattered all over different folders.

Even though it’s easy to use, Snowbox packs a punch with its full range of features. It even snagged the win at the "Open Source Jahrbuch" hacking contest! Performance Considerations

Now, since Snowbox runs from inetd, it's not going to be your high-performance POP3 server. But don’t worry! It’s totally sufficient for most everyday tasks and is perfect for smaller sites that just want a straightforward and easy-to-use server.

Installation Made Easy

To install Snowbox, simply run "make install" in its distribution directory. This will set up the Snowbox executable in /usr/local/sbin. It will also create an initial config directory at /etc/snowbox. Inside this directory, you'll find two files: "config," which is the global configuration file for snownews, and "user.auth," which lists users allowed to connect to your server. And don't worry—these files won’t be overwritten if they already exist!
