What is sub2srt FOR LINUX?

sub2srt

sub2srt is a super handy tool for converting two popular subtitle formats—microdvd and subrip (both with the extension .sub)—into the .srt format, which is what subviewer uses. This makes it easier to work with subtitles, especially if you're into video editing or streaming!

Why Use sub2srt?

This tool is perfect for those who need their subtitles in a format that ogmmerge can handle when multiplexing into OGM streams. So, if you’re looking to streamline your subtitle process, this could be just what you need!

Requirements for sub2srt

Requirements:

  • Perl - but don’t worry! It’s just a single Perl script.

  • You might want to copy sub2srt to a directory like /usr/local/bin or /usr/bin so it’s easy to access.

  • If you're using Gentoo, good news! You can find my ebuild in portage.

Getting Help

If you need more info on how to use it, simply run sub2srt --help. It’s that easy!

Add More Formats!

The latest version adds support for even more input formats! You can now use Timeshift, Checks, Regex-Replace, and more. Just keep in mind that this tool doesn’t convert DVD subtitles or vobsub—that's not in the cards.

What’s New?

Here’s what’s new in this release:

  • Add support for a third input format: “txtsub”

  • You’ll get prompted if you’re about to overwrite files—no more accidental losses!

  • A few minor tweaks here and there make it even smoother.

  • You can now handle both types of NTSC frame rates easily via command line options.

  • A pesky bug regarding NTSC framerate has been fixed too!
