Description

Tcl/Tk

The Tcl/Tk project is a cool open-source and totally free scripting environment. It works on multiple platforms and is super portable! You can do stuff like string processing, pattern matching, and even control other programs just like you would in a shell. Plus, it has TCP/IP networking, timers, and event-driven I/O.

What is Tcl?

Tcl stands for Tool Command Language. It's really easy to learn, so you can whip up a useful program in no time! The best part? You can use Tcl/Tk however you want, even for commercial projects. Tcl is the programming language itself, while Tk is the GUI toolkit that helps you design graphical user interfaces for your Tcl programs.

Installation Made Simple

If you're looking to install Tcl and Tk on your GNU/Linux system, you'll find them as two separate source tarballs (that's just fancy talk for archives). You'll need to download both if you want to use them together. You can grab the latest versions from Softpedia.

How to Install Tcl/Tk

To get started with installation, save the source archive wherever you like. Then extract its contents. Open up a terminal emulator and navigate to where those files are using the 'cd' command.

Once you're there, go into the folder that matches your platform (like unix), then run these commands: './configure && make', followed by 'make install'. Make sure you're root or use sudo so it installs system-wide!

Built for Developers

Both Tcl and Tk are mainly written in C programming language. Interestingly enough, they also use Tcl to create these tools! They're designed with developers and system admins in mind.

Compatibility Across Platforms

You'll be happy to know that this software runs on all GNU/Linux distributions as well as various BSD flavors like FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. It supports both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures too!
