Description
UnicodeConverter
UnicodeConverter is a handy Java program that helps you convert text and HTML files into Unicode UTF-8. It supports several formats like ISC, TCVN3 (ABC), VISCII, VNI, and VPS. Plus, it can handle Unicode Composite, Numeric Character References (NCR), and VIQR (Vietnet). No matter what, the output will be in Unicode Normalization Form C, which we often call Unicode Precomposed format.
Easy File Conversion
What's cool about UnicodeConverter is that it works in both graphic user interface (GUI) and command-line modes. You can convert multiple files in a folder or even an entire directory with just one command or a few clicks. Oh, and there's drag-and-drop support too!
Word and Excel Support
If you're using Windows, you can also convert Word documents and Excel workbooks. This feature works thanks to JACOB, which is a bridge that connects Java with COM Automation components. Just keep in mind that this extra functionality isn't available for other platforms.
System Requirements
You'll need the Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.4 or later installed on your machine to run UnicodeConverter. You can grab JRE for free from Java's official site. If you're on Mac OS X Tiger or Panther, you're good to go without any extra setups!
How to Run UnicodeConverter
This program comes as an executable Java Archive file. After downloading UnicodeConverter-1.3.zip, unzip it! The main file you'll run is UnicodeConverter.jar
. You can double-click it or use the command line with commands like:
java -jar UnicodeConverter.jar
javaw -jar UnicodeConverter.jar
If you want to convert files directly through the command line, make sure you're in the right directory where your jar file is located.
Your Files Will Be Safe!
No worries about your original files; they remain unchanged after conversion! All new output will land in a folder named d_Unicode
, right next to where your original files are stored.
Tips for Better Conversion
A quick tip: It's best not to have Microsoft Word or Excel open while converting those documents since it might slow things down or cause errors. Also, try to limit the number of text boxes within Word documents because too many can really slow down the process.
Prep Your Files for Success!
If you want smooth sailing during conversion of HTML files from older formats, consider doing some prep work first! Update fonts and remove any old dynamic links; this makes everything run smoother when converting.
