What is UProxy FOR LINUX?

UProxy

UProxy is a cool proxy tool designed for UDP protocols. Originally, it was made so players could enjoy Unreal Tournament games over the Internet while using computers that shared a dial-up connection.

What Can UProxy Do?

But wait, there's more! UProxy isn't just for Unreal Tournament. You can use it with any client-server app that works with the UDP protocol and doesn't need fixed ports. Plus, it runs on Windows, Linux, or any operating system that supports BSD sockets.

A Bit of Background

UProxy started out to let people play Unreal Tournament on LANs connected via dial-up. But you can totally use it for other games like Quake too! It's also useful for any program that uses UDP without needing a fixed port - so not only games!

Why UProxy?

You might wonder why create UProxy when udpproxy already exists? Well, I tried to get udpproxy working on Windows but hit a lot of bumps along the way. So instead of wrestling with it, I built UProxy from scratch! Now, it compiles and works on Windows and Linux - and probably other systems too!

Features & Functionality

Right now, UProxy doesn't have all the features of udpproxy yet. But don't worry; adding them won't be hard! For now, it's pretty usable as is. And I'm taking my time to figure out what features are really needed before jumping in.

How to Use UProxy

If you're looking to set up UProxy, here's how you do it:

uproxy localport serveraddress serverport

  • localport: The port where your proxy listens for incoming requests.

  • serveraddress: The address of the server where client requests go.

  • serverport: The port where the server listens for requests.

For instance, if your computer's address is 172.16.2.1 and it's online through a dial-up connection, you can run this command:

uproxy 7777 123.123.123.123 9999

This lets other computers in your LAN access an internet server at 123.123.123.123 that runs Unreal Tournament on port 9999!

Status Updates & Notifications

While you're running UProxy, it shows some stats every ten seconds about bytes sent and received. When a new client connects, you'll see a message pop up. If there's no activity from that client after thirty seconds, the connection will drop - and another message will let you know.

What's New in This Release?

This latest version has some cosmetic tweaks in the code and fixes an annoying bug affecting UProxy on Unix-like systems.
