VWM, or Viper Window Manager, is a cool and lightweight window manager you can use right in your Linux Terminal. It's open-source and super easy to customize! It’s built using the libviper and libpseudo libraries, which you can install on your GNU/Linux system either separately or during the VWM installation from the official software repositories.
This project was designed as a drop-in replacement for the Screen command-line tool. But guess what? It gives you a more visual way of managing windows, plus it lets you extend its features with Mozilla-style plugins. How awesome is that?
The best part? You can navigate everything using just your keyboard since Viper runs entirely inside the terminal. If you're into using a mouse, no worries! You can enable mouse support through GPM (General Purpose Mouse).
If you’re ready to get started with VWM, installing it is a breeze on many GNU/Linux distributions. Just grab it straight from their official software repositories using either a command-line or graphical package manager.
If for some reason VWM isn’t available in your distro’s software repos, don’t sweat it! You can download the latest source package from Softpedia. Save it to your computer, unpack it, and then open up a terminal emulator—like this: cd /home/softpedia/vwm
.
Next up, go to the upstream directory by running cd upstream
. Then compile everything with the make
command. After that, run make install
. Just make sure you're running this as root or use sudomake install
, so it installs system-wide.
If you're curious about how it works behind the scenes, VWM is written entirely in C programming language. And guess what? It has been tested on both 32-bit and 64-bit computers without issues! For more details about this nifty software, check out its official homepage at this link!
