Description

VXE

VXE is a powerful tool that keeps your UNIX servers safe from intruders and hacker attacks. It acts like a guard, protecting software subsystems like SMTP, POP, HTTP, and any other system already running on your server.

Why VXE Matters

The main issue with UNIX security is that the superuser can control everything. There are programs called daemons that run with these superuser privileges. Programs like popd and sendmail, which can be accessed over the network (like the Internet or Intranet), could have bugs. If an intruder finds one of these bugs, they can connect to the program via the network and take control of your entire host!

What is VXE?

VXE, or Virtual eXecuting Environment, serves as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). Its job is to keep UNIX servers secure from hackers and various threats. The best part? You don't need to change anything in your current software setup; you just need to protect it!

How VXE Solves Problems

VXE tackles crucial issues by safeguarding hosts and specific subsystems that operate with superuser permissions and may have vulnerabilities. This is a real-life scenario we face daily.

What Can You Do with VXE?

You can use VXE for many tasks:

  • Demon protection mentioned earlier.

  • User access to command line tools (like shell or telnet) with restrictions—no tricks allowed! VXE defines what tools each user can access.

  • User CGI hosting is possible through VXE.

  • Limits on resources for user-uploaded CGI scripts make it easy to manage without hassle.

The License and Updates

The source code for VXE is available under the GPL license, which means it's open for everyone!

What's New in This Release:

  • vsnprintf replaces vsprintf in print.c for better safety.

  • A fix was made in common.vxf regarding two string syscalls (like #38).

  • If there’s a LISP error, the arguments causing it will be logged now.

  • The web-based VXED development system has switched from TclX & LISP to PERL!
