Wayland
Wayland is a cool open-source software designed to be a simple replacement for the X Window System, which you’ll find in almost every Linux-based operating system out there—like 99.9% of them!
What’s in the Wayland Project?
The Wayland project includes the main display server called Wayland and a compositor known as Weston. Now, even though Wayland isn’t an X11 server, it works like one because it’s built as a protocol for compositors to communicate with clients like Weston. Weston can also act as an X client.
How Does It Work?
You can run Wayland as its own display server on top of KMS (Kernel Mode-Setting) and evdev input devices. It can work as a Wayland client or even fit into traditional applications meant for the X Window System. Weston has some flexibility too; it can run under KMS or as an X11 client, making it great for mobile or embedded devices.
Clients and Compatibility
There are lots of different clients that can work with this next-gen display server! They could be other display servers, X11 servers (whether full screen or rootless), or any standard application you might think of. Plus, there’s even a C library version of Wayland available!

Wayland gives developers all they need to get their display server up and running smoothly. The Weston compositor comes loaded with demo clients that serve as great examples for building more complex ones.
The Future of Desktop Environments
You might notice that popular desktop environments like GNOME and KDE Plasma will likely be among the first to switch over to the new Wayland display server. But don't expect it overnight; it's going to take some time—probably years—for all Linux app developers to fully port their apps over to Wayland.
