Description

The Word Add-in For Ontology Recognition

The Word Add-in For Ontology Recognition is a handy tool designed for Word 2007. It helps you annotate your Word documents using terms from Ontologies. Sounds cool, right?

What's the Goal?

This add-in was created by Microsoft External Research to help communities that keep ontologies. The aim is to make it easier for these communities to experiment and improve the writing experience for authors using Microsoft Word. They want to blend semantic knowledge into your content, which can really spice things up!

Simplifying Your Writing Process

With this add-in, developing and checking ontologies becomes a breeze! It makes ontologies more accessible for all kinds of writers. Plus, it helps integrate semantic content right into your writing experience. This means you capture what you know and mean right from the start, making it easier for others to find your work later.

Helping Scientists Write Better

If you're a scientist working on a manuscript, this add-in is here to help! Its main job is to add semantic information as XML markup to your manuscript using ontologies and controlled vocabularies (thanks OBO!). It also connects your manuscript with existing public data repositories—super helpful!

Preserving Semantic Knowledge

As part of publishing and archiving, the terms added by the add-in can be pulled from Word files because they're saved as custom XML tags within the content. This way, the semantic knowledge sticks around even when you convert documents into other formats like HTML or XML used by the National Library of Medicine.

A Complete Approach

You get the most out of rich semantic content with a full approach that keeps semantics and metadata intact throughout the publishing process. It starts with gathering insights from authors (the experts) and ensures this knowledge stays available when published. Plus, it helps search engines present your work effectively!

Collaboration Behind The Scenes

This project is a result of teamwork between Microsoft External Research and Dr. Phil Bourne along with Dr. Lynn Fink at UC San Diego. They're also collaborating with Science Commons to make this add-in relevant for more people while preserving valuable semantic data during publishing.
