Getting Started with GTK+

But don't worry; if you compile your app against GTK+ 2.8, it'll still work with older versions down to 2.2 since wxWidgets checks for newer features at runtime.
Compatibility Notes
wxWidgets 2.8 still supports GTK+ 1.2, but keep in mind that no new development is happening for that version anymore.
Building wxGTK
If you want to use wxGTK with GTK 1.2, make sure to use the --with-gtk=1 option when configuring it. Also, if you're looking to build the library in Unicode mode (so all strings will be wide strings), configure it with GTK 2.0 and add --enable-unicode.
Organizing Your Builds
A little tip: it's best to build the library in a separate directory! This way, you can keep different builds (like debug and release) running at the same time without any fuss.
