wxGTK is a cool package that has wxWidgets for the GTK+ library. If you're into developing apps, you'll love this!
wxWidgets lets developers create applications for various platforms like Win32, Mac OS X, GTK+, X11, Motif, and WinCE using just one codebase. You can even use it with languages like C++, Python, Perl, and C#/.NET. The best part? Apps made with wxWidgets look and feel native to each platform because it uses the platform's own controls instead of trying to mimic them.
This package is not only extensive but also free and open-source! It’s been around for a while, so you know it’s reliable. Many developers have jumped on board—why not give it a shot too?
To really get the most out of wxWidgets, it's recommended to use at least GTK+ 2.2.3. Some features are only available with GTK+ 2.4 or even later versions like GTK+ 2.8. But don't worry; if you compile your app against GTK+ 2.8, it'll still work with older versions down to 2.2 since wxWidgets checks for newer features at runtime.
wxWidgets 2.8 still supports GTK+ 1.2, but keep in mind that no new development is happening for that version anymore.
If you want to use wxGTK with GTK 1.2, make sure to use the --with-gtk=1 option when configuring it. Also, if you're looking to build the library in Unicode mode (so all strings will be wide strings), configure it with GTK 2.0 and add --enable-unicode.
A little tip: it's best to build the library in a separate directory! This way, you can keep different builds (like debug and release) running at the same time without any fuss.
