Description

xdelta

xdelta is a handy library and application that helps you compute and apply file deltas. It uses VCDIFF encoding and decoding, making it a great tool for file management.

Who Made xdelta?

This cool project was created by Joshua MacDonald. The delta algorithm behind xdelta is inspired by the Rsync algorithm, which was designed by Andrew Tridgell and Paul Mackerras. But even though they share some ideas, xdelta has its own unique look and feel!

Installing xdelta

If you want to get started with xdelta, you need to check out the INSTALL file for setup instructions. After that, it's a good idea to read through the first few sections of the documentation available in info format. You can find all the docs in the doc/ subdirectory.

Using Command-Line Options

xdelta comes with several command-line options to make your experience smoother:

  • -0..9: Set the zlib compression level (0 means no compression, 9 means maximum).

  • -h, --help: Prints a short help message if you're ever confused.

  • -q, --quiet: Suppresses some warning messages for quieter operation.

  • -v, --version: Shows you the current version of xdelta.

  • -V, --verbose: Gives you a bit more information about what’s happening.

  • -n, --noverify: Turns off MD5 checksum verification for files.

  • -m=SIZE, --maxmem=SIZE: Limits how much memory xdelta can use for caching pages (e.g., use 32M for a 32MB cache).

  • -s=BLOCK_SIZE: Adjusts block size unless it's set already—this can speed things up!

  • -p, --pristine: Stops automatic decompression of gzipped inputs to keep everything consistent.

What’s New in This Release?

This latest version has some bug fixes and improved performance! Plus, it still features that awesome VCDIFF encoding. If you're interested in downloading it or want more details about what it offers, check out this link: Download xdelta here!
