Diff-ext

Diff-ext is an awesome extension for file managers like Nautilus, Konqueror, Thunar, and even Windows Explorer. It lets you easily launch diff and merge tools on files you select. This is super handy when you want to see the differences between two files quickly.

Why Use Diff-ext?

I personally use Windows Explorer as my go-to file manager. Occasionally, I need to check the differences between two files. There are plenty of graphical diff programs out there like kdiff3, tkdiff, WinMerge, csdiff, and Araxis Merge. But here's the catch: most of these tools don’t let you compare files directly from Explorer or make it easy to compare files in different folders. That's why I created a simple extension for Explorer's context menu.

How Does It Work?

This shell extension (Diff-ext) allows you to kick off a file comparison tool for two or three files right in the same directory. Plus, it lets you “save” one or more files for future comparisons! It works like an external Most Recently Used (MRU) list for your comparison tool.

Compatibility with Unix/Linux

Good news! Diff-ext has also been ported over to Unix/Linux systems. It plays nicely in Gnome, KDE, and XFCE environments too! You’ll find that Diff-ext integrates well with Nautilus (gdiff-ext), Konqueror (kdiff-ext), and Thunar (xdiff-ext) file managers.
